Of course, the ZING we’re referring to is downsiZING and, to get you started, here are some of our favourite tips…
BE A BOOK EDITOR.
Books take up so much room. Edit your book collection and donate unwanted books to second-hand stores or charitable organizations for flea markets or book sales. Or share your favourite books with friends and family!
DON’T SAVE THINGS FOR GOOD.
Use and enjoy the gifts people give you. Don’t be like many people and store these gifts in drawers and cupboards saving them for “good”. We have often found these treasures wrapped in tissue, in the original gift boxes. Instead of being saved for good, these items often end up going to donation.
EDIT BEFORE YOU BUY.
Don’t fall into the trap of buying storage boxes, bins, and baskets to store things you no longer want or need. Edit files, craft supplies, books, and clothing before you shop and save time and money. Be sure to measure shelves to make sure storage boxes will fit properly on them.
TAME THE MAGAZINE MONSTER.
Funny thing about magazines and newspapers -- they accumulate! Start a new habit and pitch one new magazine for each magazine you bring into your house. If you want to save recipes, decorating ideas or magazine articles, clip the articles and put them in an accordion file. Label each slot to simplify filing. Keep potential paper clutter organized and in one location.
TELL ME THE STORY.
Some items in your home have “heart” value because they are important to you and your family. They can often become family heirlooms IF everyone knows the story behind them. Take time to document the history of these items -- a special baby blanket, an elegant serving dish or a wonderful piece of jewelry – because, with the story attached, it will become even more meaningful.
THE IMPORTANT THINGS IN LIFE AREN’T THINGS!
When you simplify your home, you will create more time, space, and energy to do the things you really want to do. Lighten-up and see what a difference it can make!
