At one time or another, most of us have been to a Garage Sale or Auction Sale. For some, searching out garage sale treasures is a great way to spend a Saturday morning; for others, not so much!
Contents or Estate Sales are similar to garage sales, but usually held in your house and conducted by companies specializing in these types of sales. Knowledgeable staff know the value of items and price things to sell. After all, that’s your goal... to find new homes for yourstuff and make money too!
These sales are one option of dealing with thing you no longer want, use or need. Over the past 20+ years, we’ve seen Contents/Estate Sales from both sides– the good and the not-so-good.
THE GOOD:
With someone else sorting, pricing, negotiating, closing the sale and arranging delivery, the pressure is off! Well, not all the pressure because you have already been on an emotional roller-coaster figuring out what to take and what to leave behind. The only thing left for you to do now is the easy part...cash the cheque you receive a couple of days after the sale.
THE NOT-SO-GOOD:
No matter how you look at it, downsizing is emotional work. We are attached to our stuff and just the idea of letting go sends most of us into a tizzy! It’s easier to help someone else downsize, but when it comes to your own stuff, all bets are off!
Once you have everything you want to take to your new home, turn the sale over to the professionals and trust them to do the best job possible.
You didn’t collect all your stuff overnight and you know many items have monetary and sentimental value. Our advice is to take a deep breath and let go.
After most of our clients have moved and settled into their new homes, they tell us “I should have downsized ages ago!”
What about you?
Are you ready to let go?
