Life lessons are everywhere and here are SEVEN lessons we learned while clearing out years of memories from our family cottage:

1. BE RESPECTFUL.

Working with other family members, can be challenging. Someone else may have an emotional attachment to something you think is…junk!

2. BE GENEROUS.

One person’s trash is definitely another person’s treasure – take surplus items to the end of the driveway and watch it disappear!

3. BE PATIENT.

The smallest items can conjure up the biggest memories. Take time to savour the stories and memories that result from a family downsizing project.

4. BE PRACTICAL.

Stuff often arrives at cottages because it is not being used at home and is too “good” to throw out. Examine each item and figure out if you want, use and need it BEFORE you decide to take it back home.

5. BE THANKFUL.

Pause and relax with the people around you. Be thankful you’ve had a family cottage and celebrate the wonderful memories that go with it.

6. BE RESPONSIBLE.

Stuff in closets, cupboards and cabinets may be past best before dates – recycle responsibly.

7. BE DONE!

Hold onto the memories…let go of the stuff!
