If your clutter is creating stress, wasting time and money and draining your energy, it’s time to get organized. Here are a few tips, tricks and techniques to consider…
CREATE an efficient work area.
In a cluttered space, creating an efficient work area may seem like mission impossible. However, by setting up a table or counter at a convenient and comfortable height, you’ll feel better and last longer. Place sorting containers and supplies within easy reach.
PICK a place and start.
Whether you are organizing an entire house, a room or a shelf, pick a spot and begin. Work clockwise or counterclockwise, top to bottom or left to right. It really doesn’t matter as long as you keep working in the same direction and dealing with each item as you come to it.
SET a time limit.
Organizing requires decision-making, creativity, strength and stamina. Establish time limits to maintain your energy and enthusiasm. Three hours is an optimum time. Any longer and you won’t see satisfying results. Any more time and you’ll become too tired to work effectively.
SPECIFY your sorting criteria.
There are many ways to categorize your “stuff”. PITCH, PATCH and PASS ALONG might sound logical and, if you are getting ready to move, add PACK. SELL, DONATE, RECYCLE and TRASH piles are also popular. If you are finding the work too emotional, sort items into three piles -- HOT (Keep), COLD (Unwanted ) and WARM (Undecided) which might helpt to speed up the process.
STORE “like with like”.
You’ll find things faster when you store similar items together. In a bathroom, you may want to keep hair care products on one shelf and medical supplies on another. In a garage, define specific areas for sports equipment, automotive supplies, household maintenance items, etc. Keep frequently used items where you can see and reach them easily.
WORK with purpose.
What do you want to accomplish? Find a place for everything and everything in its place? Create a serene environment? Identify a new function for your space? Having a specific goal in mind makes the decision-making process easier.
The best time to get organized is TODAY!
