At Downsizing Diva, we know a thing or two about downsizing, moving and clearing estates. When I faced the challenge of clearing out the house my parents had lived in for more that 64 years, a few downsizing lessons were reinforced:
Let go of things you don’t want, use or need... NOW.
Most of us have too much stuff, but many people would rather rent storage space than part with surplus items. Reclaim your space by selling or donating these items right away.
Buy something new and let go of the old.
No point buying a new toaster if you are going to keep the old one. Either it works or it doesn’t...figure it out!
Ask for help!
When you are stuck, ask a friend or family member to help. The person working with you will not be emotionally attached to your stuff and can help you let it go.
Don’t assume your family wants your stuff!
Some of your furniture and accessories evoke wonderful memories...for you. If your plans are to downsize, select items you really treasure and let go of the rest. Tastes change and younger family members will likely have very different ideas of home decor than you do.
“It’s better to give with warm hands, than cold.”
This statement, made by a participant at one of our presentations, means...if someone likes one of your treasures almost as much as you do, consider giving it to them NOW. Then, they can enjoy it and you can feel good seeing them treasure something that was so important to you.
Take the first steps to clear clutter and you will be well on your way to reclaiming your home... and your life!
